Back online at last
We arrived in Addis two days ago after a relatively comfortable journey. We all managed to get some sleep on the 12 hour flight from JFK to Dubai, and then we got some more solid sleep in the Millennium Hotel there, although we had to be up at 5:30 after getting to sleep at 11:00. The hop from Dubai to Addis is only three hours, and was also pleasant.
A driver from our guest house picked us up. The place we’re in is clean and bigger than I’d expected. The people that run it are very friendly and welcoming, and take good care of us.
Of course our first priority was to go see Malkias. Yonas, a taxi driver who does a lot of business with Horizon House, ran us over there. It’s a little under four miles away. It’s closer as the crow flies, but there’s no very direct route.
Malkias is very small but seems healthy to me. He’s alert and bright. He takes a great interest in people and in object. He’s good at picking things up. He’s not able to sit up yet and his legs are nowhere like strong enough to stand on. Maia seems smitten with her little brother. She’s doing really well given the time changes she’s been through, given that she’s in a new culture, and given that we are taking a new child into our family.
People at Horizon House were astonished by how much Maia has grown since they last saw here. When she left Ethiopia she was just a peanut. We’ve been to see Malkias twice now and we’ll be there again today.
It’s been hard getting online. We had no electricity for a day, and although Horizon house had power on the second day their phone service was out. Our power came back on last night, so here I am on a 44kbps dialup using an XP machine. I’d forgotten how awful Windows is!
We have lots of photographs, but it’s not feasible to upload any at the moment.
More later!
