On the tip of my tongue…
You know that feeling, of knowing that you know a name but not being able to get it into consciousness? Sometimes I can “feel” the shape of the name, or remember how long it is and how many vowels and consonants is has.
According to this article in the Boston Globe the phenomenon arises because we store information about one subject (e.g. a person’s face, their name, where we met them) in different parts of the brain, and sometimes we can’t connect all the information, so that we end up with a “hole” in our memory.
