President Apostate?
I was very suspicious yesterday, reading Edward Luttwak’s piece in the Times, arguing that Obama, if elected president, would be an object of hatred for Muslims because he has “converted” to Christianity from Islam — a heinous “crime.” Further, Luttwak believes that it would be the duty of Muslims to kill Obama and a grave sin for security guards in Muslim countries to protect him, complicating any visits to the Middle East.
Today’s letters page confirm my suspicions.
Barack never was a Muslim, so he can’t have “converted.” His father was a non-practicing Muslim, but Islam isn’t a race but a religion, and isn’t hereditary like Judaism. A child born to a Muslim has no duty to practice his father’s religion. Apostasy is a concept applied only to adults.
Sometimes I wonder what the Times is up to. They employ “reporters” like Judith Miller who are essentially government propaganda agents, give Bill Kristol a weekly opportunity to campaign for the election of a Republican (any republican) will do. They apparently do no fact-checking on Kristol’s columns, which have been riddled with inaccuracies. And then they employ a military historian to write a piece on Islamic jurisprudence, without apparently feeling the need to consult any Muslims or even non-Muslim experts on the subject.
The Times has however endorsed Hillary Clinton, and I’m sure she’ll be delighted to see the Times carrying on her sly campaign to portray Obama as a crypto-Muslim. And she’ll love the implication that Obama would be unfit to negotiate in the Middle East.
