Wordless Wednesday 05/21/08

Something different this week: my great great grandfather, Leslie, Lickley, who worked on whaling ships out of Dundee and also worked in diving bells. (Added later: don’t know his birthdate. He was married in 1859 and died in 1910).

Different indeed! I love this photo…it’s like a trip back in time. My, how I wish my ancestors had saved their images somewhere…
I’ve posted my WW contribution here, and hope you can drop by and say hello.

Have a great Wordless Wednesday!

How awesome to have that photo. Vintage photos are such a treasure.
That’s a great old photo. How wonderful to have it.
There’s something wonderful about old photos. This one is so well preserved. I bet he’s really handsome under that beard.
How great it is you know his history. Maybe he was even whaling up my way.

That’s cool, my Great-Great Grandfather worked in Dundee too, as a tram driver, I haven’t got any photos of him, though. Nice keepsake.
Nice to see you again. Wonder if that is a Buffalo Robe he’s sitting on. Cool little tree in the pot. Looks like a staged setting, nice to see how they did things back in the day. I have some old photos of family back on the reservation on the porch steps of their cabin.
Happy WW! Remarkable photo. I envy you having this type of family history documentation. Well done…
I honor the legacy of Ted Kennedy on my WW meme this week.

Just Some Thoughts
hi..great vintage photo for a trip back in time.
hope you can also check out our WW posts here and here
This is a very cool picture…You are lucky to have historic pictures like this available of your family!
It is always so interesting to speculate on who what where and when w/ old photos
Very cool photo. It is so great that you and your family still have this kind of thing. I always ask my grandmother for old photos, but they have mostly been lost through moving around.
Thanks everyone who’s commented so far. I’m very fortunate that I have an aunt who has kept all the family photographs — mostly in one thick album — and who also has an amazing memory. I plan to go through the family tree I’ve put together and record everything she can recall about each person.
Funny thing — there’s a chain of only fourteen people between me and my ancestors in the 1450s. I tend to think it shouldn’t be that hard to pass information down a chain of fourteen people (especially since there are backups in the form of other family members) and yet, with a few exceptions, we tend to know nothing about anyone prior to our great-grandparents.
That’s some old photo! Cool
!
I’d love to have some old photos like this. I think it is so wonderful that you do.
@Sukhmandir Kaur: Yes, all the pics I have from the late 1800s are staged in this way. And that may well be a buffalo robe he’s sitting on — I’ve often wondered. And I’d love to see the pic of your family!
@clarence: Funny to think that the two might have met. Perhaps my ancestor rode on your ancestor’s tram! What was his name?
How wonderful to have such a photo in this great of condition. A treasure.
I love these types of photos and it really is in nice shape! Awesome.
I love old photos! This fantastic. The clothing, the beard, his facial expression. So much to study.
@Cherie: Yeah, the clothing! It’s so baggy and wrinkled. And presumably this was Leslie dressed up in his finest so he could get his picture taken!
Love your choice of pic for todays WW. Nice with a real old photo with some history behind it!
Have a great day!!
