Wordless Wednesday 9/5/07

This one’s a beetle I shot at the same church I mentioned in the last Wordless Wednesday post. He was a handsome fellow.

You can click on the image to see a full-size shot.

This was taken on a Konica-Minolta DiMage Z3, which had a fantastic zoom and macro capacity, and which I was sorry to lose when my car got flooded a few weeks after this picture was taken.

    Sorry you lost your camera.

What kind of beetle is that? Am sorry about the camera, too. Seems like it’s a really good one, judging from this shot.

I’m afraid I don’t know what kind of beetle it was — some kind of African beastie.

The camera was excellent in some ways. The macro was excellent, as you can see. However in taking outdoor shots in bright light the colors tended to be quite washed out and it couldn’t handle contrast very well — for example when taking a picture of a face outdoors and there are strong shadows plus highlights bouncing off the skin.

K-M have since stopped making cameras.

OK, I’ll confess the story of how I lost it. In April we had heavy rains and a dam upstream from our house burst. Since we live right on the river we were placed under a mandatory evacuation. After a couple of days we were told we could head back in. However when we got there there was still water on the road. Well, I thought, they did say we could go back, and since the water didn’t seem to be too deep I started driving through.

    Bad idea.

About 50 meters into the puddle I discovered one of my wheels was no longer in contact with the road — I’d strayed because I couldn’t see into the water. And it turned out that the water was rising and it started filling the car. Unfortunately the camera was in a bag on the floor and got soaked.

The car got towed and was OK, but the camera died. And as soon as we got to the house we were told we were back on a mandatory evacuation! We were out of the house for four days altogether, and had a narrow escape. The water had gotten to within 3/4 of an inch of coming through over the sills.

So that’s how I lost my camera!
