Bodhipaksa’s teaching and event schedule

Here’s Bodhipaksa’s calendar of teaching events.

FEB 29, 2012
NEWMARKET, NEW HAMPSHIRE
Intermediate Meditation Course

Learn to change your mind! There’s a lot more to meditation than just the bare techniques of the mindfulness of breathing and loving-kindness practices. On this eight-week course, Bodhipaksa will introduce specific ways of dealing with negative emotions such as ill will, anxiety, and self-doubt, and will teach techniques for cultivating positive states of calm, joy, and concentration. There will be ample opportunity for participants to practice the techniques they are learning and discuss their experiences. Suitable for anyone who has learned how to meditate and is wishing to deepen their practice.

MARCH 30 – APRIL 1, 2012
NEWMARKET, NEW HAMPSHIRE
Becoming a Spiritual Rebel

What are we looking for? What gives our lives a sense of meaning? How can we find a sense of confidence in a world marked by change?

In the “Noble Quest” sutta from the Middle Length Sayings, the Buddha offers a first person guide to the pursuit of a meaningful life. Drawing on his own life story, he beautifully outlines the creative spiritual restlessness that drove him to reject any goal short of complete awakening.

On this weekend, led by Bodhipaksa, we’ll explore the Buddha’s teaching on attaining the sorrowless state, and get in touch with the “spiritual rebel within.”

Bodhipaksa has been a member of the Triratna Buddhist Order since 1993.

SEATTLE BUDDHIST CENTER
Knowing the Mind of the Buddha

Being a Buddhist should mean, by definition, that we want to be enlightened. But what would it be like to be Enlightened? What is the experience of a Buddha?

One of Bodhipaksa’s obsessions is the quest to know the mind of the Buddha — to understand what the Buddha’s experience was, to understand how it feels to be Enlightened, to understand how the Buddha saw the world. This is a challenging project, since the Buddha perceived himself and the world in a radically different way than we do. Trying to see the world the way the Buddha did requires trying to see beyond limited and fixed habits that we often don’t even realize we have!

In this Dharma Day talk — and guided meditation — Bodhipaksa will try to bring us nearer to knowing the mind of the great spiritual hero, Gotama Buddha, so that we can get closer to experiencing the joy and freedom of the Enlightened mind.

MAY 10 TO 13, 2012
SEA-TO-SKY RETREAT CENTER, WHISTLER, BRITISH COLUMBIA

Tasting Freedom, a Weekend Retreat for the Vancouver and Seattle Sanghas

Join Bodhipaksa on this weekend retreat, and learn powerful and effective techniques for stilling the mind, relaxing the body, and awakening joy.

In the Buddhist scriptures, dhyana — or joyful meditative absorption — is described as being “an escape from a confining place.” But how often does our meditation feel truly freeing, calm, and filled with deep joy? More often it’s an endless round of thinking, story-telling, and daydreaming, interspersed by efforts to come back to our immediate experience. At best, experiences of liberation from the “confining place” can be hit or miss.

In thirty years of experimenting with meditation, Bodhipaksa has formulated an innovative series of exercises that reliably set up the conditions for the arising of dhyana. Over the course of the weekend you’ll learn new techniques to help you calm your mind, bring a sense of energy and relaxation into your body, and find a deep sense of joy and appreciation for the mere fact of existing.

In the inspiring surroundings of the Sea-to-Sky Retreat Centre, and in the friendly company of the Vancouver and Seattle sanghas, learn how to escape from the “confining place” of mental turmoil and distraction, and experience a taste of what the Buddha called “Nirvana, here and now.”

  1. Dear Bodhipaksa,
I am the co-editor of the meditation page for the website: allthingshealing.com. I gather 5 articles per week to publish on my page. I would love to share any of your articles that I may from Wildmind. Right now I’m specifically looking at the one titled: Publilius Syrus, “To do two things at once is to do neither.” Please let me know if that is ok. I will also add any links that you would like and would like to attach your bio (http://www.bodhipaksa.com/about). Thanks, Eden Kozlowski

Sure, feel free to republish that article, as long as you link it to Wildmind (http://www.wildmind.org). It would be helpful if you could link using the words “Wildmind Meditation.”

    Thanks for asking!

  3. Hi my name is Steve Bonnell and I am helping do events coordination for East West Bookshop of Seattle and we wanted to inquire about the possibility of a SKYPE event with you. East West has had several successful SKYPE events within the last year hosting such authors as Bruce Lipton, Sonia Choquette, Jon Gabriel and Dan Millman and our customers have really enjoyed the intimacy and interactive qualities of SKYPE at East West as well. We’ve sold your guided meditation CDs in the store for years with great success and would enjoy hosting an interactive SKYPE event with you. Please let me know if this sounds interesting to you as we are trying to get all of our dates for our fall newsletter booked within the next week or so. Thank you for your consideration.

      Hi Steve,

It’s funny, but I’ve been planning to call you, not about Skype events, but about a book launch. Sounds True is bringing out “Living as a River,” a book on embracing change, on Oct 1. I’m waiting to hear whether I’ll be presenting at a conference in San Francisco, but once the dates were confirmed I was intending to see if I could arrange a book launch at your place. It would be in late October, most likely.

But yes, a Skype event would be excellent. I meditate with a friend using Skype quite often, and I’m pleased you’re using it in this innovative way. What kind of dates are we talking about? I guess it wold be easier to do this by email. My address is “bodhi” on one end of the @ and wildmind.org on the other.
